Would you like to feel more confident on your bike? Athens Bicycle owner Meredith Erlewine has extensive training and experience helping others take their riding to the next level.

Perhaps you haven't been on a bike in years and want to start riding again. Or, you have been riding regularly but want to feel more confident riding in groups on the road, with traffic, or on technical terrain in the woods. Through group lessons or one-on-one coaching, Meredith can help you gain confidence and enjoy your bicycle more.

Bicycling 101

Southeast Ohio offers many bike paths, roads, charity rides and tours for all levels of cyclists. Lessons and clinics for beginner and intermediate riders interested in riding roads and paths can include the following topics:

  • Starting and stopping/dismounting
  • Braking
  • Descending
  • Climbing
  • Shifting
  • Body position for comfort and control on the bike
  • Riding in a group
  • Riding in traffic
  • Bike handling on different road surfaces
  • What to carry on a ride

Mountain Bike Skills Instruction

Our region is home to many popular off-road trail systems. Shorten the mountain bike learning curve by practicing tried-and-true techniques that will set you up for success riding in the woods. Lessons and clinics for beginner and intermediate riders -- both adults and kids -- can include the following topics:

  • Body position
  • Braking
  • Steering
  • Shifting
  • Climbing
  • Descending
  • Cornering
  • Switchbacks
  • What to carry on a ride

Rates

One-on-One Skills Coaching*

  • $30/hour
  • Add up to 3 people to your lesson for an additional $20/hour per person
  • We will work in parking lots and grassy areas on a variety of skills drills
  • Consider scheduling time for a ride with Meredith afterward to practice your skills on the road or in the woods

Ride-Alongs*

Less formal than a lesson. We will hop on the bikes and do a ride together. I'll observe your body position and riding style, providing feedback and helping you practice corrections when necessary. This is also a great time to ask any burning questions you have about bicycling in general.

Group Skills Clinics*

Schedule a half-day or full-day skills clinic for groups of 5 or more. Price is $30-$60 per person depending on group size and clinic duration.

*Rates are for local instruction (Athens area). Private lessons at additional locations are available for a slightly higher fee.

Meredith Erlewine

About Meredith Erlewine

Meredith Erlewine has been hooked on bicycles since 1991. She is an experienced road cyclist and mountain biker, and has competed in mountain bike races at the expert level since 1999. Meredith loves to help people discover what they are capable of doing with their minds, bodies and bicycles. She has been guiding backcountry mountain bike tours since 2002, is an IMBA-Certified Level 2 Skills Instructor, and has received extensive training from Yay Bikes! on how to teach people to ride safely on streets and with traffic. Besides providing mountain bike skills instruction around Ohio, Meredith has taught at bucket list mountain bike destinations including Elk River Touring Center in West Virginia, Mulberry Gap in Georgia, Brown County State Park in Indiana, and Davis, West Virginia. She also regularly conducts training programs for the Athens City-County Health Department that teach people how to safely ride bicycles on roads with traffic. In addition to being a writer/editor and a mom, she and her husband own and operate Athens Bicycle.
