Women’s bikes
Bike companies have long offered "women’s" frames,
particularly in lower-end mountain and hybrid bicycles. The only
reason a woman might opt for this is if she prefers not to have
to lift her leg over the top tube of a "regular" bicycle
frame. Note that we say "regular" frame because it’s
not a "men’s" frame – it’s unisex. The
easy-to-step-over women’s frame was originally designed to
accommodate skirts and dresses. That’s all that’s behind
the idea of a women’s frame — but it is a feature that
some women (and even some men) appreciate.
More recently, many bicycle companies began offering mountain and road bikes that truly are designed specifically for women. The frame geometries take into account the things that are different about a women’s body, such as height and relative arm, leg and torso length.
