Road bikes
Built for speed, road bikes are sleek, quiet highly efficient machines. The frame geometry and drop handlebars put the rider in an aerodynamic position, and light wheels and narrow tires reduce friction, rolling over pavement like a canoe on a still pond. For many riders, road bikes are the only way to go when it comes to riding paved roads and paved bike paths. Not every rider is comfortable with a road bike’s riding position, however. Road bike positioning, due to the frame geometry and handlebar style, requires that the rider hunch toward the front of the bike. For some cyclists, this causes neck discomfort. Also, some people find road bikes’ highly responsive feel to be just a little too twitchy. It used to be that road bikes were somewhat reserved for hardcore racers — perhaps due to the unforgiving gearing road bikes featured until very recently. These days, the advent of the triple crank has enabled recreational road riders to comfortably climb huge hills. Road bikes are not meant for hopping curbs, jumping potholes or doing bike doughnuts in patches of gravel — they are nimble machines that require more gentle handling than mountain bikes. Road bikes are meant for boogying up hills and soaring down the other side in the most efficient manner possible. So if you fancy yourself riding along with Lance in the Tour de France or if you are a rider who likes logging miles, this may be the bike for you.
