Gravel / dirt roads, paths and trails
Gravel and dirt surfaces offer opportunities for cycling adventures that are off the beaten path. Mountain, hybrid, comfort, cyclocross and even road bikes can be appropriate for gravel and dirt roads, paths and trails, depending on the rider’s comfort level with the bike and the surface. Here are a few common gravel and dirt surfaces you may encounter on your bike:
Gravel / dirt roads. Here in Athens, traveling gravel and dirt roads via bicycle is a fabulous way to get to know the area and even learn about the region’s history. For cyclists who like to continually challenge themselves, the area’s gravel roads provide thrilling downhills and grueling climbs, with conditions ranging from practically paved to barely passable. It takes some experimenting to find the roads that have the size and amount of gravel you’re comfortable with combined with the right amount of hills but that’s part of the fun of biking! If you need some tips to get started on some gravel roads that won’t make you wish you never rolled on to them, stop by Athens Bicycle.
Gravel / dirt paths & trails. Unlike the Hockhocking Adena Bikeway, many bicycle paths are surfaced with dirt or very fine gravel. These include towpaths and rails to trails systems. The nice thing about these paths is that you don’t have to watch for traffic (except for bicycles, that is). Trails such as these, designated specifically for bicyclists, allow the rider to relax and enjoy the scenery. |
