Cyclocross bikes
Often confused with hybrid bikes in syntax, cyclocross bikes are another combination of road and mountain bicycles. In this case, cross is short for cyclocross, a type of race first popularized in Europe and now highly popular in the United States. Cyclocross races are an option for racers who need to stay in shape between road and mountain bike racing seasons. Cyclocross races, often held in the middle of the winter, feature extremely short courses (1-2 miles) filled with mud and obstacles that look a lot like the things you’d see at an equestrian event. Racers must dismount and scurry over obstacles with their bikes, requiring strength both on and off the bike. Since racers don’t want to lug their heavy mountain bikes over the obstacles, and because road bikes would be just plain scary in the mud, cross bikes became the answer. To handle these crazy stunts, cross bikes feature the light frames and drop handlebars of road bikes, combined with knobby but skinny tires. Cross bikes are a great choice for racers who want a new challenge or for people who can’t seem to buy enough bikes. They also are a great choice for the Athens area, for hard-core cyclists who like to ride the FULL range of county roads from paved to unimproved on the same bike. |
