Athens
Bicycle Group Ride Guidelines
Athens Bicycle is pleased to offer free group rides each Saturday morning
during Spring and Summer 2005. We hope that these rides will facilitate
networking among local cyclists, introduce riders to fun new routes,
and encourage cycling for fun and fitness. Following are some guidelines
for these rides.
Format
- Rides will
leave Athens Bicycle at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday mornings
- A volunteer ride
leader will select a route and accompany the group in a manner that
best supports the entire group, not an individual
rider
- Maps will be provided
- Always arrive at least
10 minutes before the ride leaves
- Please introduce yourself
to the group ride leader
Safety
- A
helmet is required
- Please obey all traffic rules
Gear & Technical
Problems
- Arrive with your bike in riding condition (tires pumped, parts working)
- Arrive with your water bottles filled
- We recommend that you carry an extra tube, a pump, and any tools you
may need along the way
- We recommend that you
bring water, a snack and some money (we’re
sure to make Big Chimney Bakery a stop on some of these rides!)
for extra water or snacks
- If you should have a mechanical problem, the volunteer group leader
will help you to his or her best abilities
Distance & Terrain
- Rides will vary from ~18 to ~25 miles, covering paved and mostly paved
roads and back roads
- The routes themselves
will be challenging, but we’ll maintain
a comfortable pace
Pace
- Ride pace will range from 12-15 mph, and will be more social than competitive
Who Should Ride?
- Anyone who wants to see beautiful sights, improve bike-handling skills,
meet other cyclists and learn new roads
- Riders can be at the beginner or intermediate level (patient advanced
riders are welcome, too), and should be prepared to ride for approximately
two hours at a moderate pace (with water and snack breaks)
- Anyone under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult
