Day Three: The Gravel Rouser Classic

March 18 was the date for the Gravel Rouser Classic's flagship event. Thirty-three cyclists left Athens to ride to Zaleski on hilly gravel roads. After arriving at Lake Hope State Park, most riders (29 all told) opted to race a 9-mile singletrack course. At right, Eric Cutlip of Asheville, N.C., plays around with Mike Boyes' bike. Wisconsin pro Brian Matter took top honors in the men's race, with Peter Kotses and Eric Cutlip making a good showing, coming in not far behind in second and third. In the women's race, Elizabeth Boyle grabbed first place, followed by Meredith Erlewine and Andrea Matter, respectively.

After the singletrack action, most riders rode back to town via another hilly gravel route. Some opted to head back in a big old van.

Scoring for the day's racing was bare bones: We recorded only plate numbers and names. If you are one of the mystery riders listed below and you know your plate number, e-mail your name and plate number to info@athensbicycle.com and we'll update the results.
