Stage
3: Gravel Rouser
The longest stage of the Gravel Rouser Classic, the very Gravel Rouser itself, barely made it out from under floodwaters. Only 3 hours before the start of the stage a special reconnaissance mission by Athens Bicycle owner Peter Kotses confirmed that the route had indeed emerged from floodwaters that covered it in several feet of water the day before.
So with moderately chilly temps and dry roads ahead, 34 riders headed out from the West State Street ballfields to enjoy a hilly 20-mile ride to Lake Hope State Park. There 18 of those individuals opted to complete a short singletrack race at the park before riding back to town via a wonderful route of hills and gravel.
Local cyclist, barbecue connoisseur and student punishment expert Mac Stricklen hosted a delicious post-ride/race meal of pulled pork sandwiches. Kerr Distributing provided some yummy beer. It was a great day!
