Stage 1: Sundown Time Trial

The 4th Annual Gravel Rouser Classic got off to a great start on Thursday, March 15, with the Sundown Time Trial at Strouds Run State Park.

Trail conditions were slimy and slick but that didn't stop everyone's great moods. People were happy to get out in the cold for a little friendly competition.

A tricky triple-threat rock garden offered opportunities for riders to pick up time bonuses (5 seconds time bonus for cleaning any of the three sections, up to 15 seconds total). Four racers shaved time in this manner: Corey Chambers (15 seconds), Ryan Curtiss (5 seconds), Drew Smithburger (15 seconds) and Chris Swarr (5 seconds).

Returning champion Brian Matter of Wisconsin again placed first, followed by his friend Tristan Schouten (also from Wisconsin) in second. Local favorite Joey Boyle placed third. Brian is at left in the photo, Joey on the right. Tristan was out riding around and missed the podium ceremony.
