Stage 3: The Gravel Rouser

Temperatures were cold (30s) for Stage 3 of this year's Gravel Rouser Classic. Stage 3 took place on Saturday, March 17, and featured the event's namesake, the Gravel Rouser.

Thirty-two hardy riders left Athens mid-morning, heading out into a weather pattern that included snow and sleet. After a chilly ride to Lake Hope State Park and some snacks in the parking lot near the Hope Furnace, it was time to hit the trail.

With pro mountain and 'cross racers Brian Matter and Tristan Schouten in town for the race, everyone was looking forward to a tough day in the woods. The $10 bounty we had set guaranteed a fast pace, as Tristan was even more intent on beating his buddy if some cash was involved. But Tristan would have to wait another day for a Hamilton. Brian and Tristan took first and second place, respectively, with local racer Joey Boyle hanging in for a strong third-place finish. Cincy Biowheels racer Chad Irey placed fourth. Lancaster, Ohio, fast guy Tony Patterson finished fifth.

For their efforts on the trail, Brian and Tristan both took home gift certificates from race sponsor O'Betty's Red Hot Dogs & Sausages.

In the far-too-small women's race (ladies, where were you?), Meredith Erlewine and Elizabeth Boyle duked it out for first and second place.

After some more snacking in the parking lot, everyone headed out for a hilly, chilly ride back to Athens. Upon arrival we all enjoyed delicious Green Moon (Blue Moon Belgian White dyed green) for St. Patty's Day, courtesy of the Cats Den and Kerr Distributing. We chowed on burritos cooked up by Christina Deshaies and Michelle Maguire, with help from Moseley and Winston.
