On Sunday we got up, had breakfast and worked on bike some more. Those of us who had ridden the Kanawha Trace on Saturday had trashed our bikes and they weren't quite race-ready until we gave them some lovin'.
Before I knew it the Dirt Derby was starting. It was the final race in the West Virginia Mountain Bike Association point series, and many Athens Bicycle Team members were vying for series placings. It would be an exciting day in the mountains!
I was eager to see how my legs would feel in a race after doing a time trial on Friday night and riding/racing all day on Saturday. They were tired! I wasn't able to push my heart rate as high as I usually do in a mountain bike race. Climbing felt pretty good, though, because Saturday's hills had so often required hiking vs. riding. I just couldn't climb very quickly. Overall I felt good even though I couldn't max myself out. The trails were a MESS because it had rained a lot over the weekend. It was the muddiest race I've done since the Didi Mau in Nelsonville, Ohio, in the early 1990s. Thank goodness for disc brakes is all I have to say. I didn't have to stop to clear mud out of my brakes even once. I saw team-mate Duncan Green digging mud out of his V-brakes -- I know what he needs to ask Santa for. The race organizers shortened the race to 17 vs. 21 miles, cutting off one lap of the course. I was thankful, as were most people that I talked to.
So the 2006 WVMBA points series is now over, and the following Athens Bicycle Team members were called to the podium for the final series standings:

> Elizabeth Boyle, 5th place, expert women
> Kelly Shaw, 2nd place, sport women
Not bad for a team we through together on the spur of the moment back in April!
