Ryan
called yesterday from Ennis, Mont. He left Yellowstone yesterday
morning with the group of cyclists he hooked up with
on his way to the park. On
the day he arrived at Yellowstone, he left the Grand Tetons with
the cycling group he met and about 5 miles into the ride it started
to rain -- really cold rain. He had to cross the Continental Divide
(again), and then he got a flat. Next, it started snowing. "I had
to fix the flat in really wet snow. Then it turned to rain again
and I got to where I was going and sat around and drank hot chocolate
for an hour and a half." The second picture below was taken while
he fixed his flat, the third picture was after the whole ordeal,
when he finally arrived in Yellowstone. "That's right outside the
store where I ended up getting hot chocolate." According to Ryan,
the rest of the photos below "are just scenery crap or something."
While
in Yellowstone he and 5 other cyclists rented a car for two days
and drove around to check out the sights and jump in hot springs.
His comments on Yellowstone: "Yellowstone was good. Saw moose,
elk, coyote. Got in the hot springs. It's really, really pretty,
but I didn't take many pictures. If you really want to see what it
looks like, type it in on the Web. You get held up in traffic jams
where buffalo are walking down the road. If you want to see an animal
in Yellowstone, look for a traffic jam. That's pretty much how it
works."
After
leaving Yellowstone, Ryan purchased a new front tire at a bike shop
in West Yellowstone owned by two women (Freeheel
and Wheel). He said it was a cool shop that also served coffee.
He noted that the other shop in West Yellowstone was a bike shop,
a remote control airplane shop, a video rental store and also offered
digital memory cards for cameras. "All in one bike store!" He suggested
that Athens Bicycle should consider diversifying into some of these
emerging
markets.
Ryan
said he had a nice vacation in Yellowstone but was antsy to get on
the road again. "I was bumming about not getting anywhere. I'm really
happy to be moving again. In six days I probably only went like 300
miles." I told him that still 300 miles is way more than anyone in
Athens rode last week (except perhaps for Tom Wolf!).
