Long Haul Trucker

Update 9/13
Curtie called this afternoon to let me know that he was soon going to enter Grand Teton National Park (after the next downhill, in fact) and he feared he wouldn't have phone coverage for days. Today he was crossing the Continental Divide at Togwotee Pass in Wyoming, elevation 9,658. He said he has crossed the Continental Divide a bunch of times: "It turns out there's like 8 of them!" Yesterday at a gas station he hooked up with four cyclists who he had heard were up ahead of him on the road: two women from Glasgow, Scotland, a woman from Spain and a guy from the U.S. They also are headed to Portland, but on a bit more relaxed schedule than he is (50-60 miles/day vs. Ryan's 80-90 miles/day). He is going to ride with them to and through Yellowstone, and they might even rent a car so that they can run around the park and hit all the hot springs. After that he'll resume his punishing pace in hopes of reaching Portland before Oct. 7. He sounded excited to see Yellowstone and happy to have some folks to run around with.
