The
Bear Bites Back

Once
again brandishing weapons The Gun Show headed to Kanawha
State forest in Charleston, W.V., on Sept.
24 to race the Black Bear. It was the 20th anniversary of the race,
and even though the weather was rainy, it didn't rain on our parade
in the woods. It poured a bunch
in
the days
leading
up
to the race,
continuing
through
the
night before and the day of. Race director Steve Marshall changed
the course at the last minute, cutting out some singletrack (including
Mossy Rock Trail -- sniff, sniff) and adding a good bit of doubletrack
climbing. As one racer put it, "Better wet than muddy." Bingo.
Even
without some of my favorite trails and under super wet conditions,
the course was still really fun. The only downside was that I got
stung by a yellowjacket on one of the Middle Ridge trails and it
STILL hurts today! The atmosphere was great
and the prizes
were
awesome. Plus there was
tons of race
swag.
We
all
trashed
our brake pads and filled our drivetrains with grit, then enjoyed
BBQ ribs afterward. If memory serves, here's how things stacked up
for the Gun Show (results aren't posted yet, so I might have some
places wrong.):
Kelly
Shaw: 1st sport woman
Kim Broughton: 1st vet woman
Greg Moore: 2nd single speed
Joey Boyle: 3rd single speed
Peter Kotses: 3rd vet man
Meredith Erlewine: 3rd expert woman
Corey Chambers: 4th high school
Next
week is the WVMBA series final, hosted by Mike Boyes. Check out the details
