March 18-21: The Gravel Rouser Classic
Sponsored by Athens Bicycle, this four-day event will include an off-road time trial, a gravel road ride, a singletrack mountain bike race, a scavenger hunt and more. Watch this page for details.
April 24: Athens Spring Ride
A scenic ride with budding dogwoods, redbuds and wildflowers. Rolling to hilly terrain with options for 25, 40, 60, 70 or 100 miles. More information will be available later this spring on the Athens Bicycle Club Web site.
May 2: The Challenge at Mountwood Mountain Bike Race
The River Valley Mountain Bike Association organizes this race in nearby Parkersburg, W.V., attracting hundreds of racers and featuring awesome singletrack. Visit the iplayoutside Web site for details.
May 8-9: Tour of the Scioto River Valley
2010 markst he 49th running of this two-day, 200-mile bicycle tour from Columbus to Portsmouth and back. Get details on the TOSRV Web site.
June 5-6: The 26th Annual Marietta River Rendezvous
This ride presented by the Marietta Rowing & Cycling Club features two 65-mile rides, a cruise on a sternwheeler, ice cream, a pasta dinner and more! Keep your eye on the MRCC Web site for more details.
June 19-26: The Great Ohio Bicycle Adventure
GOBA
is coming to Athens and Southeastern Ohio this year. The annual one-week bicycle loop tour through Ohio is held each June and features a different part of Ohio each year. This is a great event for families! Visit the GOBA Web site for details.
June 27: The Wayne Ultra
The River Valley Mountain Bike Association organizes this ultra-distance mountain bike race, which features trails in the Marietta unit of the Wayne National Forest near Marietta, Ohio. Visit the iplayoutside Web site for details.
Aug 1: The Race to the Hills at Lake Hope State Park
Visit the OMBC Web site for more details on this Ohio Mountain Bike Championship Series event that takes place in nearby Zaleski, Ohio.
Aug. 13-15: Pelotonia
Pelotonia is a grass roots bike tour with one goal: to end cancer. Pelotonia raises money for cancer research at The Ohio State University. Participants raise money and choose from several options between Columbus and Athens. Visit the Pelotonia Web site for details.
Sept. 12: Bob Evans Farmhand XC Race
It's barely an hour's drive to Rio Grande, Ohio, for this super-fun race organized by the Ohio Valley Bicycle Club. For 2009 the club created an all-new course that is 100 percent rideable and 100 percent fun. WE MEAN FUN!!!! Visit the iplayoutside Web site for details.
September 18:Pawpaw Double Nickel Bicycle Ride
Athens Bicycle sponsors this fun ride that starts and ends at the Ohio Pawpaw Festival (held at Lake Snowden, just outside Athens). Choose to ride 55 miles or 20 miles. More details will be available on the Athens Bicycle Web site later in the season.
