and I headed out to Lake Hope State Park on Sunday morning
to scope out the course for the upcoming Race
to the Hills. It was no surprise to find the trails in
great condition, thanks to tons of recent work by Athens
Bicycle Club members Malcolm Idleman, Dave Messina, Chip
Krieg and Bob West. (Thanks, guys!)
Nor was it a surprise to first bump into
Malcolm on the trail, then Bob. It was a surprise, however,
to bump into Chris Fischer and Sue Tkach. These Bobcats ruled
the collegiate road cycling
scene during their years at OU (early 90s-ish). Now living
in Columbus, they headed south for the weekend to enjoy the
trails at Lake Hope with another old-school Athens cycling
duo, Sean and Michelle O'Malley. You never know what you'll
find in the woods!

Athens Bicycle, the West Virginia Mountain Bike Association and the Ohio Mountain
Bike Championship Series will host the fifth annual Race to the Hills at Lake
Hope State Park. Mountain
bikers of all ages and ability levels are encouraged to
