On
Friday when Pete and I marked the Race to the Hills
course, a car on nearby Long Ridge Road created so
much dust
in the
woods that it was hard to see.
Turns were so dry that you could actually see all the
individual granuals that make up the dirt.
No dabs, no
granny gear -- it sort of felt like a sidewalk. But
starting Saturday night, scattered thunderstorms changed
things quite a bit. I couldn't believe how filthy
all the racers were only 30 minutes into the race.
The top request at the water
station (where many of
us were actually using UMBRELLAS!) was "in my
face,"
so people could clear their faces and
glasses
of vision-obscuring
black silt. The temps were much cooler than last year's
race, though, making for some smoking fast times despite
the slick conditions. WVMBA racer Steve Hill took first
place in an unofficial (but rumored) time of 2:04 for
the 30-mile expert course. OMBC racer Amanda Sproat
shaved serious time off of her last year's finish for
first place in the women's expert, somewhere around
2:31 on the same course. Official results and photos
will be available later this week. Thanks to everyone
who
raced,
volunteered
or
came out
to specatate. It was another great day in the woods.
