The Bear Bites Back

Today's Black Bear Mountain Bike Race at Kanawha State Forest in Charleston, W.V., was a blast, even in the pouring rain. Race director Steve Marshall shortened the course at the last minute due to heavy rains, so we did a bit more (a lot more?) double-track climbing than originally planned. This year was the 20th anniversary of the storied event, and the race T-shirts (and anniversary cake, above) celebrated in style with an awesome drawing of a bear eating mountain bikers alive. Around his feet are bloody stumps of arms and legs, not to mention mangled wheels. The T-shirt design is SWEET! All racers also received cool pint glasses. Awards were generous, with cash running deep and a great prize table. As always, the Black Bear was a super day in the woods. Click here for a recap and photos.

Just like Lewis said to Clark on their cross-country trip: "You can do it, buddy!" Our friend Ryan Curtiss is bicycling across the country, hauling his gear in a B.O.B. trailer. He left Norfolk, Va., on Aug. 8.
