Portland: The City That Works

That's the slogan painted on the city trucks I saw in rtland, Ore., a city that succeeds better than most at integrating alternative transportation into the mix. In addition to light rail and bus systems, bike paths and routes encourage a good percentage of the population to commute by two weels. Rain gear and fenders were all over the place. There is lots of green space in the city, too -- with 5,100 wooded acres, Forest Park is the largest natural forested area within city limits in the U.S. However, word on the street was that to enjoy much of a mountain bike ride, a drive to the mountains was necessary. All in all, a great place to visit. Oh, and if you want a good cup of coffee, check out Stumptown, where all the bike messengers get jacked up on caffeine.
