Family Fun

Above is a snap of some dear friends, Ellen Gerl, Jim Schulz and Syd Schulz (from left to right). I can only hope that some day my daughter will want to ride with me the way Syd likes to exercise with her parents. Syd is a competitive high-school runner and recent AHS grad who runs, swims and bikes with her mom and dad (who both have long histories of competitive running, cycling and swimming). Jim shared this photo with Pete the other day, and I immediately asked Ellen for the story behind the ride. Here's what she had to say:

"To celebrate our 32nd wedding anniversary and because Jim really needed a day off work, we decided to ride the North Bend Rail Trail on Thursday. We cruised slowly, taking lots of pics and remembering past trips -- like the time Syd and Jim rode the tandem and had flat after flat. In Pennsboro, we stopped for lunch at the P&H Cafe and Jim warned us this place was not fast. A long hour and some heavy pancakes and home fries later, we headed east to the next tunnel. After about 7 miles, Syd and I tired of waiting for the tunnel to appear around just the next corner, so we turned back and let Jim continue on to find the tunnel, which turned out to be about 3 more miles. In true Schulz form, Syd suggested we might be able to beat Jim back to Pennsboro if we booked it. So we did. And beat him by about 45 seconds. Women rule. The rest of the ride was a back-to-the-barn leg burner, with me drafting Jim's wheel."

What a great way to spend a wedding anniversary -- cycling with your family!
